After so many years of bad Stephen King horror movies, this finally brings the writers imagination back to the screen, and its mainly thanks to Jackson and Cusack.
Usually with King movies, you don't get two actors as prolific as this, with the exception of a few, and when there are limited characters in the film Misery, and The Shining , we have more time to focus on the main characters.
For the most part, its the John Cusack show, and like him or not, he really puts in a great performance as the cynic who finally starts to believe.
Jackson is great,but he is little more than en extended cameo. Its pretty scary, and deals with loss to good effect, and whichever version you have seen, its still a satisfying, unnerving experience.
And it was refreshing to see a 'classical' ghost story released during a time when every other horror movie relied on gore for the thrills.
I can honestly say that this is high on the list of the worse films I have watched. The overall plot is totally ludicrous. The acting, oh dear the acting, is bad beyond belief.
It is a film worthy of the waste bin. I really struggled to watch it through to the end but I wanted to see if it would get any worse and sad to say it did.

The build-up is fairly slow-burn, with the film's strengths coming mainly from the well-judged acceleration in events from the innocuous to the dramatic.
Like many modern horror films, it maybe loses its way slightly in trying to reach a grand, audience-pleasing denouement, which seems somewhat as odds with its more realistic and haunting beginnings.
However, there are enough genuine frights along the way and a good central performance from Cusack to make this a recommended watch for all horror fans.
Interestingly, neither the actual or alternative endings on the DVD are the one I saw at the cinema. And this is a good thing.

In my earnest opinion, the updated ending shown here completely eliminates the tone of the film. Call it bias, as I really and truly enjoyed the film as I saw it in theaters, but this ending shown here ruins the film for me.

The projected images of older times in black and white displaying previous tenants jumping from the building was a bit much as it seemed to connected to that being portrayed from a television set.

I was a bit disappointed in the ending, however, as it was! I found that disappointing in that it appeared that the producers of the film attempted to make it some how more unsettling, but I found the original ending much more clever.
