In , three men attempt to flee communist Russia, escaping a Siberian gulag. This movie tells their story and that of four others who escaped with them and a teenage girl, Irena Zielinska Saoirse Ronan , who joins them in flight.
The group's natural leader is Janusz Weiszczek Jim Sturgess , a Pole condemned by accusations secured by torturing his wife, spent much of his youth outdoors, and knows how to live in the wild.
They escape under cover of a snowstorm: cynical American Mr. They face freezing nights, lack of food and water, mosquitoes, an endless desert, the Himalayas, as well as many moral and ethical dilemmas throughout the journey towards freedom.
I went with my friends to see this the other day - we picked whatever film was on soonest at the cinema. The Way Back was on I had no idea what the film was about only that I'd heard that "People walk out of Russia".
This film really had you captivated for the entire journey - and you really connect with the characters within it, so much so you experience their emotions with them - you laugh with them, you are on the verge of tears at moments, and you feel their determination.
The acting was great - there were some familiar faces in the likes of Jim Sturgess 21 and Ed Harris everything else Colin Farrell finds himself taking a respectable role in a respectable film - and does a very good job at it - and even manages to work a Russian accent, which he pulls off - and he pulls it off well.
Surprisingly well, actually! Given her youth, she manages to draw in the audience with her character's history and gravitas. The other actors within this, despite them being relatively unknown on the Hollywood stage, join the cast well, and the chemistry is there to make the journey and the true stamina of the group believable.
The cinematography was immense, with shots overlooking parts of Russia, Mongolia, Tibet, and India - just helps you realise the vastness of the journey.
Most of the journey is filmed looking closely at the characters, but this is what is crucial to the audience enjoying the story.
You can't have 2hrs and 13 mins of beautiful scenery and see the intimate struggles with each of the characters The audience can see just what the struggles and difficulties are I even got a map out later and routed the journey they took I should expect that this film would receive some Oscar nominations, maybe for cinematography, director, perhaps even best picture, but I would love to see Jim Sturgess having a nomination for his role.

Dan informs Father Devine, who fires Jack, telling him he is unable to trust him around the team and fears he has a serious problem.
Jack resumes drinking heavily. One night, while driving drunk with a woman he meets at the bar, Jack rear-ends a boat hitched to a parked car.
The woman flees, telling him to enter her house through the back. Jack accidentally enters the wrong house, where he is confronted by its occupants.
Jack attempts to leave before the police arrive, but the confrontation becomes physical. He is pushed down the front steps of the house and is knocked unconscious in the street.
Jack awakens in the hospital where he is met by Beth, who demands he get help for his alcoholism. Jack begins to attend therapy , and starts to open up about his son's death.
He meets with his wife and apologizes for his past mistakes. The Bishop Hayes team dedicates their first playoff game to Jack; Brandon sees that his father and brothers are in attendance.
Meanwhile, at an outdoor court, Jack picks up a basketball, beginning to shoot. The film was originally scheduled to be released on October 18, On March 19, Warner Bros.
This was just two weeks after the film's theatrical debut and before the end of the usual day theatrical run.
The website's critics consensus reads: " The Way Back ' s occasionally frustrating treatment of a formulaic story is often outweighed by Ben Affleck's outstanding work in the central role.
Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter wrote: "Affleck gives the impression of intimate familiarity with the anguish and self-disgust that dominate Jack's life; this character and project clearly meant something important to him, as the title bluntly suggests, and he gives it his all without overdoing the melodrama.
