It's entertaining while being true to the play. It's excellent to use along side the play while teaching.
Students love it! You may want to use subtitles as they purposely slur the words and have heavy background noise. Later it will settle down to clear siliquae but still nice to read.
Everyone actors and we finally get into the feel of the play and have the fun of overacting not yelling but gesticulating.
This will not be the last time things have changed to match the movie and not the play. It is a tad unnerving and to find witches replaced with ghoulish nurses is a tad stretching.
The time and place are different so the politics may not be as effective. And of course, being Shakespeareised we get the popular history of the real Macbeth skewed.
The bottom line is good actors but so may things out of place and so much effort to make this presentation unique made this presentation unique and not Shakespeare but Director: Rupert Goold.
The description says this is a Region 1 disc -- U. So I thought I was safe buying it. It also does list it is PAL format, but I had never known that there was anything to that NTSC is the other format -- and, as it turns out, the important factor in this case, but I had never known i needed to watch for anything other than the Region designation.
As it turns out, this is NOT a Region 1 disc. It is Region 0 which I also did not know existed. And there's the rub: the U. Had the Region code on the listing been correct, I would have had to look it up at that point to understand what I was purchasing and would have learned that the PAL designation made it a no-go for me.
I almost didn't watch past the opening scene. But thank goodness I made it past that exclamation point such care is taken with every sentence that you really do hear every word.
There are certain things I heard for the first time. What I enjoy the most about this rendition of Macbeth is how bone chillingly scary it is.
The three Weird sisters are hilarious in their merciless treatment of Macbeth. Especially the one that hushes him when he chased her. Lady Macbeth is by far the most well acted performance of the role yet.
She reminds me of a crack head on skid row when she is wandering in the night. Even the actor walking on the table does it with style.
Love it. Oh yeah. This Macbeth film makes me hunger for chocolate cake, sandwiches and wine. While Lady Macbeth is a little melodramatic and her dynamic with her husband is less than stellar, the way they use Macbeth himself to evoke Stalin is brilliant.
Patrick Stewart really brings his A-game trying to be both the wolf-of-war Macbeth and the is-he-insane-or-just-emotioinal Stalin.
This setting for the play really makes the scene with Malcom and Macduff make so much more sense. In an "iron curtain" setting, of COURSE Malcom would want to make sure Macduff had moral character rather than just trying to climb the ladder and attain power!

Best of all, they do not take liberties with the dialog. I enjoyed watching this much better than the theatrical one that came out in Stewart is brilliant, the direction is innovative and amazing!

Welbeck Abbey is such a fine location - it looks like a Soviet nightmare, and I want to go there. This is not a place for an in-depth critique of the text, save to note that its quality is inconsistent, and that the Scottish ruling cadre that it presents is ill-defined.
As with Dickens, a director really has to trim, to adapt, just as much as Hemming and Condell compounded. There's no suggestion in the text that Ross is the anonymmous 'Lord' of Act3 Sc6, nor that Lennox is torturing him, for instance, and in the text the first lines are those of the witches, while this version starts with the 'bloody man', who delivers his speeches before one witch injects him full of death, and 'Where shall we three meet again?
The production has no reserve in getting its hands not just dirty, but gory to the armpits; Fleance may escape the train on which Banquo is liquidated, but the ensuing purge takes many others.
Macbeth's portrait, very much in the manner of Stalin, dominates the banquet which, it is quite clear, the diners only care about leaving alive.
The fear of Macbeth is palpable, and when Angus makes to light up, Macbeth takes and crumples the cigarette, sprinkling the tobacco over his head.

The costuming is annoying - a mixture of styles for no reason that is clear to me and to no particular effect. And that's it.
Everything else about this production works beautifully. Ian McKellan and Judy Dench are absolutely magnificent. Their slide into evil is absolutely convincing, the anguish it causes them is completely natural.
All the ambition and cruelty that we expect are there, mingled with a tenderness and regret that are often missed by lesser actors.
The supporting cast is all good, though not uniformly so; some are excellent, some merely good. The witches are creepy in a repellant rather than a scary way.
The supernatural elements of the play aren't played out with special effects, but rather take place in the minds of the characters.

In spite of the senseless costume design, this is a solid five. This stripped down, stripped absolutely bare of everything except for the actors costumes it seems, with a backdrop seemingly darkness itself and nothing else, is an amazing production.

This Macbeth" had no scenery, almost no props, and no sweeping outdoor vistas or massed troops. In short, it was done as it was written, as a stage play.
The entire load was on the shoulders of the cast, and they bore it well, from the smaller roles up to the two leads, McKellen and Dench, who need no praise from me to enhance their reputations!
If you're like me, you need two Macbeths - the big Polanski production when you're in the mood for spectacle, and this one when you want to enjoy Shakespeare rendered by two great actors and good support.

I saw this production onstage in London in the warehouse where it was produced by Trevor Nunn in the 's. Nunn had been trying for years to get "Macbeth" right, but kept missing the mark till this one.
It is shattering. Once you've experienced Judi Dench as Lady Macbeth, none other will ever do. This petite woman's enormous power is all-encompassing, and Ian McKellan is equally fine in the title role.
All the supporting players are stunning as this was a true ensemble production, and many have gone on to have major film careers. Superbe adaptation.
